Introduced in 2003, the G2 EZ iron is designed specifically for slower swing speeds. With higher loft angles, extreme perimeter weighting, wide soles and low CGs, this iron produces higher-launching shots with greater forgiveness.
September of 2003 saw the arrival of the entire Ping G2 Irons series. Among them were the Ping G2 HL Irons, which were designed and engineered according to Ping’s notoriously demanding specifications to be an iron that really helped players get a higher launch (hence the “HL” in the “Ping G2 HL Irons”.) In fact, there primary design mission was to replace mid and long irons that were hard to hit. Like just about all Ping products, the G2 HLs really took the game by storm, and were an intelligent complement to complete G2, G2L and G2 EZ sets. The G2 HLs, a new breed of mid and long irons, became a fixture on greens around the world.

The Ping G2 HL Irons were all about the high launch. To get the arc that every player is after, the G2 HLs used a widened sole that really got the ball moving. Working with the sole was the extreme perimeter weighting, that takes weight away from the head face and redistributes it around the edges. The overall affect moved the head’s center of gravity (CG) away from the face. The result? Balls that go longer, higher and land a lot more softly.
Additionally, the moving of the weight to the perimeter meant that that critical moment of inertia was increased. The Ping G2 HL Irons’ heavier perimeters also resulted in a greater forgiveness on off-center hits – something any level of player could appreciate. Adding to this greater control was the wider sole, which strengthened and stabilized the face. That lead to a more forgiving bounce and less dragging into the grass and dirt.
By any measure, the Ping G2 HL Irons were an impressive addition to the already-impressive Ping family. Still in constant use, the Ping G2 HL Irons command the respect of golfers everywhere.
